Product description

An ordinary scale gives you a number. The RD-445 does more. Electrodes in the platform and in the handgrips let it measure your right arm, left arm, right leg, left leg and trunk separately. So you learn not only that you are two kilos lighter, but whether that was fat or muscle, and where. Everything appears on the display. No app, no account, nothing to pair.

21 readings from one measurement

Step on, take hold of the grips, and a few seconds later you know:

  • Weight, accurate to 50 grams
  • Muscle Quality Score, found only on TANITA
  • Muscle mass, total and per body segment
  • Body fat percentage, total and per body segment
  • Visceral fat
  • Body water percentage
  • Bone mass
  • BMI
  • BMR, the energy you burn at rest
  • Metabolic age
  • Physique Rating

Muscle quality: not how much, but how good

Two muscles of the same size can differ a great deal. One holds dense, strong muscle fibre. The other has more non-muscle tissue sitting between the fibres. You will not spot that difference in the mirror or on a bathroom scale, but the Muscle Quality Score shows it. Research links lower muscle quality to reduced strength and a less favourable metabolic picture. If you train seriously, or you are getting older, that number often tells you more than kilos of muscle mass.

Everything on the display

No Bluetooth that refuses to connect, no account to set up first. All 21 readings appear on the large display, with colour to show where you stand. Want to look back? The Recall function scrolls through your earlier measurements, up to twelve months.

Accuracy

TANITA was the first company to bring bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to market, and the technique is used worldwide by dietitians, physiotherapists and sports coaches. The RD-445 measures at two frequencies, 50 kHz and 5 kHz, combined with TANITA 4C™. Against the reference method that works out to:

  • 97% for body fat
  • 98% for muscle mass
  • 98% for fat-free mass
  • 98% for body water

The scale reads up to 200 kg, in 50 gram steps below 100 kg. Many other scales stop at 100 grams.

For the whole family, and for athletes

Anyone from 5 to 99 can use the RD-445. For children aged 5 to 17 it shows weight, BMI, body fat, bone mass and muscle mass. There is room for five profiles and the scale works out for itself who is standing on it. Guest mode handles visitors without overwriting anyone's history. Training twelve hours a week or more? Switch on Athlete Mode, which adjusts the calculation for an athletic body.

Who it is for

  • Athletes tracking muscle growth and recovery segment by segment
  • Anyone losing weight who wants to know more than the number of kilos
  • Families after one good scale for everybody
  • Anyone who does not want an app or a subscription

    Eerste indruk

  5. Great once you get the hang of it, but room for improvement
    Rating
    80%
I thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the Tanita RD-445. It is very accurate and insightful. There were some things I liked and others I disliked. What I liked:

    * Quality, made in Japan.
    * Accurate point-in-time readings, good reputation.
    * Splits measurement readings by bodypart, even gives you cool scores like muscle quality and physique scores.
    * Does what you expect and provides good insight.
    * No frills or unnecessary things - sticks to value adding the basics.

Room for improvement (maybe overcritical, but I believe this could help TANITA improve their product):

    * Unclear how to fix mistakes (like with initial setup - wrong height for example, or if a reading is taken on the wrong user profile, or if I took a reading with my phone in my pocket and want to discard it, it is not possible - it will be stored unless I reset the current and previous reading). Had to read up online that a hard reset is required by removing batteries. It does not seem mistakes can be fixed on the fly - and a loss of data (although limited to 2 readings per user) may be imminent. A guide to this topic is not supplied in the box. Overall initial setup felt more complicated than it needs to be and I had to repeat it once and deeply follow the instructions manual. Absolutely not obvious enough for "plug-and-play". Maybe returning TANITA customers already have the hang of it, but for new customers it may be a problem.

    * Currently it is only possible to add a user number, not a name... so I have to remember that I am user 1 and another family member is user 3 etc. But for this, more buttons or a different UI would be required.

    * Like mentioned, good for point-in-time readings, but it does not store a long history on the device. It has the current recording and the recording just before it per user, so you can flick back and compare to last time which is nice, but you will not see more history than that. They provided a printed matrix to manually record the stats with pen and paper, and they recommend you make photo copies of it (who still owns a photocopier?). The analog way makes it difficult to see trends and improvements in readings. Having been to Japan I completely understand why this is the way it is, since they are more paper-based and enjoy physical things, but for the European market, a digital downloadable version would have been nice. I ended up creating one from scratch myself. Or even the ability to store more recordings and being able to export to Excel with a cable or something? Even this would be a bit old school in today's age but a nice addition to the paper.

    * The on/off button is on a terrible location and very sensitive to the touch. At the bottom of the scale. So almost every time I picked up the scale to move it, I accidentally turned the scale off.

    * I understand that at the lower price they do not want to include app connectivity and they reserve this for more expensive models, but a few navigation buttons on the device itself would be really nice. On this topic, there are unfortunately competitors at this price point (or even lower in some cases) which do have the exact same recordings/ stats WITH app connectivity (at least 2 or 3 that I could find). But understandably, TANITA has the reputation which may be enough (for now) to let customers pick this device above others.

In short, I see this device as the "old school" device that just works well, but other are catching up.

I do believe that this price-range/ segment will become more and more competitive, especially if competitors can prove they are on par with accuracy. Some people would choose ease of use above historical reputation. I believe if TANITA implements the changes I suggested they would be more competitive at this price range even without app connectivity.
